SprayFoam Information

Advantages of SPF (Sprayed Polyurethane Foam):

SPF reduces energy use in buildings beyond its stated R-value because SPF:

  • provides a continuous barrier
  • prevents moisture infiltration through air leakage
  • minimizes dew point problems and condensation
  • avoids thermal bridging
  • resists heat movement in all directions
  • provides reliable performance under varying condition

Continuous Barrier

It has been estimated that Forty Percent (40%) of a home's heating or cooling loss results from air flow through cracks beneath the sill plate, around wall outlets and windows, along duct runs and other leak sources throughout the building envelope. Insulation materials that are not self sealing and monolithic fail to stop this waste of energy through cracks and openings between the studs and the insulating material.

Prevents Moisture Infiltration through Air Leakage

United States government energy labs estimate that air filtration wastes up to 40% of every home's heating and cooling dollar. Studies show that there was more than 30 billion dollars wasted in 1984 alone. It is one of the country's most critical home energy problems. Unfortunately, most residential buildings were constructed before the scope of the problem was widely known. But today, new homes are being built utilizing the SPF (Sprayed Foam Insulation) solution, right from the start. This is the latest money saving technology for new home construction. The closed-cell nature of Polyurethane Foam stops air leakage problems at the source.

Open celled products are susceptible to moisture intrusion, air movement and the thermal degradation related to those two issues. Any imperfections in the building envelope, holes, cracks, or gaps in the insulation materials will definitely contribute to poor performance or worse, moisture accumulation, allergen, and pathogen growth and very possibly to structural failure. You an do the building envelope only once.

Reliable Performance

A one-inch sample of polyurethane foam insulation consists of millions of tiny closed plastic cells filled with inert gas. Much like argon in double and triple pane window, our insulation performance is not dependent on uncontrollable factors like trapping still air.

Two inches of our product has a perm of less than one. That's a good thing! Two inches of SPF will do the most effective job of stopping air infiltration, exfiltration, convection, and solar driven moisture in the stud cavity.

Avoids Thermal Bridging

Thermal bridging is another notorious energy thief. When insulation is not continuous, and the building components are very conductive, substantial reductions in performance of R-values are observed. The March/April '95 issue of Drexel Insulation Report presented a table that showed heat transfer through metal studs could lower the effective R-value of some insulation from an R-25 to an R-9.6.

Lowers Energy Consumption

The importance of proper insulation usually becomes apparent when it's too late to correct the problem. Heating and cooling account for 50%-70% of the energy used in the average American home. Homeowners quickly learn that undesirable air and moisture infiltration in a finished house increases energy consumption, which in turn, leads to high utility bills and steadily decline resale home value.

Other Advantages

The solid nature and seal-ability of cured foam, which is moisture resistant itself, inhibit moisture-driven elements, providing for dry comfortable interiors. There are many other advantages inherent to sprayed-in-place rigid polyurethane foam.
  • It helps reduce exterior noise
  • Creates a barrier against gas and odor
  • Retards insects and rodent penetration
  • Adds structural integrity to the house

Investment Return

The initial application cost of the system is offset by constant yearly pay backs through lower heating and cooling bills. Insulating your home with sprayed polyurethane foam will typically save enough money in reduced utility bills to pay for itself within a few years, continue to save you money for as long as you own your home, and increase the resale value of your home. High utility bills can be avoided.

By choosing an insulation system like sprayed polyurethane foam, you are able to create an energy efficient home. This may even allow you to qualify for an Energy Efficient Mortgage. (Click to read more.) An EEM allows a lender to stretch both the housing debt-to-income ratio and the total debt-to-income ratio two percentage points. These ratios are typically 28% and 36% respectively. This two point stretch increase those qualifying ratios to 30% and 38% respectively.
